Can 'My Story Marketing' be Effective?

By Jan Shimano

There is a lot of talk these days about the term 'My Story Marketing'. Like many other people, you might be wondering what it is and whether it can help you in your business. Every one of us has a story to tell and for some of us it could even be a very compelling one. However, our story will definitely have no impact on our business if no-one every gets to hear it.

So how can we get our own unique story out there for all to see? Those that have been most successful at doing this, have used the social network marketing scene. The most popular ones today are YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. Even though they all have different features, they all put a great deal of emphasis on interaction with other people.

They all contain a section where you can enter pertinent information about yourself. Many people fail to utilize this properly. They might just enter a notation about where they live or what they do for a living but they tell the reader very little about themselves. This is their chance to tell their story and connect with others. This is the opportunity to draw people in.

If you have your own website, make sure you name it and tell them that you are the creator of it. You then want to give them some information on your background. If you are young, you might have to be a little creative, as your past experiences will be limited. This is where an older person can have a big advantage. They can pick and choose the most interesting stories to tell about their lives to date.

Regardless of your age, make sure you talk about a major problem that you faced. Go into detail about this. For example, perhaps at one time you were on the verge of losing your home. Explain how desperate you were to find a way out. Don't be afraid to be personal. You want people to relate to you on a deep level. Once you have their attention you should then go ahead and tell them about the solution that you came up with. An excellent phrase to use is "all that changed when...." This is where you explain your business opportunity and how it dramatically turned your life around.

The final stage to 'My Story Marketing' is a call to action. For some reason, people shy away from asking for what they want. There can only be two responses, and that's 'yes' or 'no'. So we have a 50% chance of getting what we want by asking. What should we be asking them to do at this final stage? We should ask them to click on the link to our website and enter their name and e-mail address so that they can receive additional information. As each site has different regulations, make sure you are not violating any of them in the manner you show your website address.

This is not a get-rich-quick scheme but if done right it can certainly create riches. Remember, you are in the business of building relationships with people who will trust, respect and like you. This does not happen overnight. Let me tell you about a friend of mine. He has developed a following of many thousands of people over the years and he recently learned of an opportunity that he thought was excellent. He told his followers about in on Twitter and within a week he had earned over $40,000.00 in affiliate commissions.

Obviously, my friend would not have had this success if he had not developed these relationships with all these people. He did this through 'My Story Marketing'. He told his unique story and he connected on a deep level with them. This is something we can all do. In fact, this is something that we all must do, if we want to stand out from everyone else in the crowd and if we want to be part of the 5% of those internet marketers who are extremely successful.
