Using an Internet Store to Make Money
In the middle of 2006 I was doing some keyword research and I came across a keyword that fit the criteria I was looking for - but I had never heard of the product before. The keyword was "trailer hitch covers." I knew what a trailer hitch was, but what in the world was a trailer hitch cover?
I went to Google to find out what a hitch cover was, and I found that it was a decorative and protective product people put on their hitches to make their vehicles look better, as well as keeping mud out of their hitch. I knew I really wanted a great internet income, so I didn't care that this product was totally foreign to me - I just needed to do my homework and make sure it could create some profits.
I guess you're probably wondering how I would figure out whether the product could be a good profit source. The first step is always to look into the search traffic numbers. I wanted to see that at least a few thousand people were looking for the product online every month. This keyword passed that test.
Once I knew that the traffic would be there I had to know how strong the competing web stores were going to be. I did a search for my term on Google and I saw that the top-ranking websites wouldn't be terribly difficult to pass. I began to think I had a high potential product on my hands.
Only one piece of the puzzle was still missing. I need to find a manufacturer or wholesaler who could supply me with the product a fair price that left me some room for profit. The traffic wasn't going to be an issue - I just needed to know that they'd be able to do something profitable after landing on my site. I was also hoping to find a supplier who would handle all the shipping as well.
Good fortune was on my side - I found a supplier whose price would guarantee me a profit margin of $10 per sale, and they were willing to send the products directly to customers. I had found a winning keyword; all that was left was to build a quality website and go after the traffic that would make me some great money.
